- Description:
- ● A hex plug is a threaded pipe plug with male threads on one end and a hexagonal-shaped head on the other end.
- ● It is a sealed-off plug that allows no flow and completely seals and closes off a female thread.
- Used for:
- ● A hexagon plug, also called a hex plug, is used to close off and seal a female threaded fitting or pipe.
- ● Threaded Pipe Plugs are commonly used for plugging female threaded ends.
- ● Used to stop flow by plugging a female thread.
- Advantage:
- ● The advantage of a hexagonal plug over a socket plug is that they have a hexagonal-shaped head that provides a larger surface for gripping.
- ● This hex-shaped head provides increased leverage during installation, allowing the plug fitting to be securely tightened.
- ● This also makes these threaded plugs better suited to situations where frequent installation and removal of the plug is required.
- To Install:
- ● Thread the male pipe threads into a female thread of the same size.
- ● The hexagonal-shaped head acts like a bolt that can be gripped by a wrench, for easier loosening and tightening.
- Sizing:
- ● A hexagon plug is sized according to the size of the thread it will connect to.
- ● For Example: a 1/2" threaded plug fitting will thread into a 1/2" female thread.
- Also Called:
- ● NPT Plug.
- ● Threaded Pipe Plug.
- ● Hexagon Head Plug.
- More Options:
- ● Another option is a Square Head Plug which is also a NPT pipe plug with a square shaped head and not a hexagonal shaped head.

- ● Other options include Threaded Caps which have a female threaded end.
- ● Scroll down to "Upsell Products" for more stainless steel threaded cap options.
- Material of Construction:
- ● These threaded plugs are constructed out of Stainless Steel 304 & 316.
More Information:
A hexagonal plug is a threaded pipe plug used in gas handling, fluid handling and in plumbing systems to seal and close off the female threaded openings in pipes and components. It differs from a socket plug and a square head plug in that it has a larger hexagonal nut shaped head, therefore it is also referred to as a hexagonal head plug. This characteristic feature of a hex shaped head provides a larger surface for gripping with a wrench or socket which increases leverage and makes it easier to install and uninstall. This makes them ideal to situations that may involve installing and removing. Another added benefit of this additional leverage is that this threaded plug can be tightened more securely during installation for application that require a extra secure fit. The external male threads of this stainless steel pipe plug will thread into female threads of the same size. These NPT plugs for plumbing have National Pipe Threads (NPT threads), which are tapered and form a secure water-tight connection when installed correctly. This makes stainless steel hex head plugs ideal for a wide range of industrial applications including in plumbing, hydraulic, and pneumatic applications, wherever a leak proof seal is required to prevent contamination. These threaded plug fittings are manufactured out of stainless steel 304 and 316, making them durable, corrosion and rust resistant.
